The tuning of light-matter coupling and dichroism in graphene for enhanced absorption: Implications for graphene-based optical absorption devices

چکیده
The inter-band optical absorption in graphene characterized by its fine-structure constant has a universal value of 2.3% independent of the material parameters. However, for several graphenebased photonic applications, enhanced optical absorption in graphene is highly desired. In this work, we quantify the tunability of optical absorption in graphene via the Fermi level in graphene, angle of incidence of the incident polarized light, and the dielectric constant of the surrounding dielectric media in which graphene is embedded. The influence of impurities adsorbed on the surface of graphene on the Lorentzian broadening of the spectral function of the density of states is analytically evaluated within the equilibrium Green’s function formalism. Finally, we compute the differential absorption of right and left circularly-polarized light in graphene that is uniaxially and optically strained. The preferential absorption or circular dichroism is investigated for armchair and zigzag strain.

Quantum modeling of light absorption in graphene based photo-transistors
Graphene based optical devices are highly recommended and interested for integrated optical circuits. As a main component of an optical link, a photodetector based on graphene nano-ribbons is proposed and studied. A quantum transport model is presented for simulation of a graphene nano-ribbon (GNR) -based photo-transistor based on non-equilibrium Green’s function method. In the proposed model a...

An optical device configuration allowing efficient electrical tuning of surface plasmon wavelength and absorption in a suspended/conformal graphene film is reported. An underlying 2-dimensional array of inverted rectangular pyramids greatly enhances optical coupling to the graphene film. In contrast to devices utilising 1D grating or Kretchman prism coupling configurations, both s and p polariz...
متن کاملInvestigating the Longitudinal Optical Conductivity in Three-Layer Graphene Systems with Composes Mono-Bi-Bi and Bi-Mono-Bi and Bi-Bi-Mono
The longitudinal optical conductivity is the most important property for graphene-baseddevices. So investigating this property for spatially separated few-layer graphene systems analytically and numerically is the main purpose of our study. Each layer can be mono- or bi-layer graphene. The density-density correlation function has been screened by the dielectric function using the random p...
متن کاملA multiple-resonator approach for broadband light absorption in a single layer of nanostructured graphene.
The interaction between two-dimensional (2D) materials and light is rather weak due to their ultrathin thickness. In order for these emerging 2D materials to achieve performances that are comparable to those of conventional optoelectronic devices, the light-material interaction must be significantly enhanced. An effective way to enhance the interaction is to use optical resonances. Efficient li...

We review our recent time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, which measure the transient electronic structure of optically driven graphene. For pump photon energies in the near infrared ([Formula: see text]), we have discovered the formation of a population-inverted state near the Dirac point, which may be of interest for the design of THz lasing devices and optical amp...
